Turbulent kinetic energy in the ascending aorta is greater in bicuspid than tricuspid aortic valve stenosis

چکیده
Background The main determinant of the haemodynamic significance of aortic stenosis (AS) is the irreversible pressure loss that is created by the stenosis. The majority of the pressure loss is caused by conversion/dissipation of turbulent kinetic energy (TKE) to heat. Recent developments in cardiac magnetic resonance 4D flow imaging have allowed the noninvasive assessment of TKE. Bicuspid aortic valve disease is known to be associated with a larger ascending aorta and disordered flow patterns, and we hypothesised that peak TKE would be higher in bicuspid AS than tricuspid AS.

Bicuspid Aortic Valve: An Unusual Cause of Aneurysm of Left Coronary Sinus of Valsalva
Bicuspid aortic valve is traditionally considered an innocuous congenital anomaly. Due to a better and widespread availability of non-invasive imaging techniques, it has come to the fore that 30% of these cases develop complications, viz., valve abnormality (aortic regurgitation and stenosis), and aneurysm of aortic root and ascending aorta. Sinus of Valsalva aneurysm is an uncommon complicatio...

BACKGROUND Dilatation of the ascending aorta in aortic stenosis may be partly explained by intrinsic wall structure changes, but the relative contribution of altered hemodynamics is unclear. The aim of this study was to assess the association between ascending aortic dimensions and valve stenosis severity. METHODS AND RESULTS An analysis of echocardiographic examinations was conducted in 296 ...
متن کاملPhase contrast 4D flow in bicuspid aortic valves in a porcine model
Background Bicuspid aortic valves (BAV) are associated with aneurysms of the ascending aorta (AAA). It is unclear whether these aneurysms are caused by tissue alterations of the aortic wall or by alterations of blood flow in the ascending aorta due to the bicuspid valve morphology. In this study we analyzed the phase contrast 4D flow characteristics in normal tricuspid aortic valves (TAV) in a ...
